How Our Tinctures Came to Be
Diagnosed with a mixed connective tissue disease (systemic sclerosis) and “auto-immune collapse”, Kathryn was told her maximum life expectancy was five years. Forest Nymph Botanicals developed from her personal quest for healing.
Being unable to work, Kathryn was sent to a rheumatologist who prescribed Prednisone and Plaquenil. The side effects of the prednisone were very difficult, causing a great deal of irritability and a personality change. When Kathryn was prescribed Chantix, she desperately wanted to end her life. She was then put on Lyrica.
Desperate to get off these so-called medicines, Kathryn turned to cannabis for relief. The heavy Indica blends seemed to work best for physical pain. A friend who has an outdoor organic grow, developed a 4 part indica, and 1 part sativa strain that he has named Mysteré.
Living in the mountains, with her husband away for work days at a time, it was difficult for Kathryn to manage while smoking bud all day. During this time, Una showed up to help her, shop for her, and comfort her. Kathryn was so grateful to have her as part of her community.
After much research, Kathryn realized that ingesting the herb was far more effective for physical pain then smoking. Turning to her old skills as a baker, she developed some terrific cookies and brownies. Ten pounds later, Kathryn realized that brownies would not be a sustainable method for pain management.
Kathryn pulled out her herb books from her student days, and our original Pain Relief Tincture was born. The Pain Tincture has been an effective way for Kathryn to manage the pain without the heavy psychotropic effect of the Sativa blends.
Feeling encouraged, Kathryn made the trek to visit Una at the Magical Arts shop in Santa Cruz. She spotted a mask that Una had made which she called “Forest Nymph” and immediately bought it.
“This is my ‘I’m going to live’ present,” Kathryn told Una.
Kathryn’s next endeavor was to get some sleep. She was off of the beta blockers, but still suffering from insomnia. She made our Sweet Dreams Blend with the same cannabis strain as the Pain Relief Tincture, extracted in brandy with the addition of valerian root for muscle relaxation. This helped to diminish her muscle spasms and over time her sleep itself improved.
Kathryn began sharing her tinctures with friends who had medical complications. They wanted more, and encouraged her to go public on a larger scale. Knowing she would need a partner, she asked Una to be the outside connection for the company. Una would manage the branding, public relations, and marketing.
With her design background, Una is an amazing craftsperson, designing jewelry, masks and creating ritual tools with bead work. The Forest Nymph mask, which had inspired Kathryn, became the face of their beautiful new business, as they named the company Forest Nymph Botanicals.
We landed our first collective and had our first professional labels printed for our products.
About this time Kathryn realized that she would not be able to return to work full time with the self care regiment that her health condition required. She needed huge amount of bed rest balanced with and exercise routine that would not cause further damage to her joints. She also realized that eating anything that wasn’t organic really worsened her symptoms. For this reason, whenever possible, we use organic ingredients.
We began to have requests from patients for a product that was not extracted with alcohol. Recognizing the role that inflammation plays in auto-immune diseases Kathryn contacted a local nutritionist for advice on other herbs to enhance Mysteré as an anti-inflammatory agent. We created our Auntie EnFlame tincture by adding a synergistic blend of herbs, ginger, for reducing inflammation and improving digestion, green tea extract, which has marvelous anti-inflammatory properties and is high in flavonoids, and turmeric, which has been shown to reduce the size of cancer tumors. Flavored with peppermint, this tincture has a cumulative effect for reducing inflammation and additionally provides support to the digestive system. Patients undergoing chemotherapy have found this tincture to be very helpful.
10 years after her initial diagnosis, Kathryn is still alive and thriving thanks to medical cannabis. Una has grown our network of collectives from Los Angeles to Mt. Shasta. We hear so many positive comments from our customers, it keeps us inspired to continue developing products that are primarily organic, wholesome, and truly in service of the healing of our world.
From all of us at Forest Nymph Botanicals, we wish you wellness on your own healing journey.
